Quatri\u00e8me \u00e9tat de la mati\u00e8re, un plasma est constitu\u00e9 de particules neutres (mol\u00e9cules, atomes, radicaux) et de particules charg\u00e9es (ions, \u00e9lectrons) en constante agitation. Ces particules charg\u00e9es sont en nombre suffisant pour donner au gaz les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s d\u2019un conducteur \u00e9lectrique. 99% de la mati\u00e8re visible existe sous l\u2019\u00e9tat plasma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cet \u00e9tat regroupe ainsi une immense diversit\u00e9 de plasmas, pr\u00e9sents dans la nature ou fabriqu\u00e9s par l\u2019homme. Dans l\u2019espace par exemple, le terme plasma englobe aussi bien le milieu interstellaire diffus que le centre d\u2019une \u00e9toile. Sur terre, les plasmas sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement associ\u00e9s \u00e0 des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes naturels comme la foudre, ou les aurores bor\u00e9ales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les plasmas artificiels, g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9s par l\u2019homme, sont utilis\u00e9s dans un nombre tr\u00e8s divers d\u2019applications industrielles et constituent un sujet de recherche tr\u00e8s dynamique et pluridisciplinaire. Ils peuvent \u00eatre regroup\u00e9s en 3 grandes familles :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Les plasmas chauds&nbsp;<\/strong>ou plasmas de fusion. Ce type de plasma vise \u00e0 reproduire les r\u00e9actions de fusion pr\u00e9sentes au centre du soleil dans une enceinte confin\u00e9e pour la production d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie \u00e9lectrique. Ces plasmas sont totalement ionis\u00e9s. Le r\u00e9acteur ITER, construit actuellement \u00e0 Cadarache, doit d\u00e9montrer exp\u00e9rimentalement la possibilit\u00e9 d&rsquo;une telle production d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie \u00e0 la communaut\u00e9 internationale.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Les plasmas froids thermiques.<\/strong>&nbsp;Ces plasmas sont \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9quilibre thermodynamique, ce qui signifie que chaque esp\u00e8ce (\u00e9lectrons, ions, gaz neutre) est \u00e0 la m\u00eame temp\u00e9rature. Leurs principaux domaines d&rsquo;application sont la m\u00e9tallurgie (soudure, d\u00e9coupe, projection thermique), les disjoncteurs et l&rsquo;\u00e9clairage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Les plasmas froids hors d&rsquo;\u00e9quilibre.<\/strong>&nbsp;Leur caract\u00e9ristique principale vient du fait qu&rsquo;ils sont hors \u00e9quilibre thermodynamique : la temp\u00e9rature \u00e9lectronique est de quelques \u00e9lectrons-Volts (1eV = 11605 K) alors que les ions et les neutres, plus lourds, restent \u00e0 une temp\u00e9rature proche de la temp\u00e9rature ambiante. Leur taux d&rsquo;ionisation reste mod\u00e9r\u00e9, entre 10<sup>-6<\/sup>&nbsp;et 10<sup>-2<\/sup>. Ces plasmas sont utilis\u00e9s \u00e0 la pression atmosph\u00e9rique, mais \u00e9galement \u00e0 des pressions tr\u00e8s basses.
